The Midlands being abuzz with expectation for the stillwater fishing season is (almost) upon us!
Huh!?! Winter is here...? Really?!?
In dispatches from the far side, the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say :

The good rains received in January / February have seen some topping up since then and kept the rivers flowing and the stillwaters are looking great.

While the streams are running crystal and dropping fast, there are still some fish to be had as we rush towards the closed season (1 June - 31 August).

It is, however, that time of year when stillwater fishing comes into it's own. Water temperatures are dropping fast, the summer weed subsides, and trout come out of the warm-water doldrums and begin to enjoy life again.

Along with the usual suspects, patterns of choice for winter run the gamut from natural to bright and gaudy. In the natual camp are your wooly buggers and zonkers, while on the gaudy side of the spectrum, try a blob instead of the bog-standard egg pattern (BTW, fave blob colours are Hot Orange, Sunburst Yellow, and bicolours like the Tequila Sunrise (orange and yellow) and Candy Split (pink and yellow/orange) and if the water has some colour in it, a black blob is hard to beat).
